The Regent’s story starts with the Savoy Cinema, a genuinely significant 1937 Streamline Moderne picture house designed by Alfred J. Thraves for Spalding Picturehouse Co, seating an impressive 1,500 across stalls and circle and billed at the time as the largest purpose-built cinema in Lincolnshire. Its cinema career gradually wound down through the 1960s, showing films only two nights a week with bingo filling the other evenings, before the final film played on 3 July 1970 and the building became the permanent Regent Bingo Club. That gave it 33 years as a cinema against roughly 51 years as a bingo hall, and by the late 1990s it was firmly established as one of Spalding’s bingo institutions.

The Regent became especially significant when Majestic Bingo took it over around 2013 to 2014, since it went on to serve as the company’s actual registered head office address, making it far more than just another club in the estate. Majestic invested seriously in the building, giving it a substantial refurbishment and relaunch in 2018, complete with a Coronation Street guest appearance, though the club never actually closed during the works. The real turning point came on 15 May 2021, when a serious fire broke out, reportedly caused by an electrical fault, badly damaging both the club and its offices just two days before it was due to reopen after Covid restrictions eased. Repairs were complicated further by the discovery of asbestos, and despite initial hopes of reopening, the Regent never traded again. In a strange twist, the fire led to the removal of a false ceiling installed during the 2000s to cut heating costs, exposing more of the original 1937 auditorium than had been visible in decades. The property was sold prior to auction in early 2025, and while the building survives, its future as anything other than a former bingo hall remains uncertain.

  1. have been many times and have had to put up with the rude and sarcastic comments a caller called Danny makes to other people, but this time he turned on me taking the p*** out of my disability. I will never go again.

  2. A friend brought a £20 voucher for his sister’s birthday, she spent most on books but some was left over. When she asked they wouldn’t let her have the rest, cash or for drinks etc. why should they keep her birthday money, no matter how small?

  3. As the General Manager of the Regent Bingo Club in Spalding, I am very concerned as to the comments posted on this website. Despite the Club having over 50,000 visits per year I take all complaints and comments seriously.

It does on the Gift Vouchers clearly state that there is no change given, however had the issue been raised with either myself or Claire (my Assistant Manager) we would have ensured all monies could have been spent.

We take staff training very seriously, and do not condone any rudeness towards customers. However what does worry me is that if the staff member had been so rude why wasn’t any of the Management team informed.

On behalf of all the team here in Spalding we welcome all customers old and new, welcoming comments and feedback, especially now that we are pushing forward and gaining ground on the bigger National bingo clubs.

    1. You haven’t really taken this persons enquiry into account all you have stated is that your head office policies must be obeyed. You do not take all the customers needs into account clearly or this issue would be solved, writing to head office, maybe changing the policy in this company (giving the change back) As this is a cash grab for the company, praying on those that don’t spend every penny. I guess you could argue that you should be more careful how much you put in but I defiantly agree with giving someone’s money back if they haven’t spent it. That’s a company issue. When a management ect says they can do nothing and that the information is clearly stated, it usually means they can’t be bothered to think outside the box and the rules are there to supply them with guidelines because they have no brain to think that this £20 could mean a lot to someone. Clearly it did. I think people should defiantly think more with there hearts and lessen bowing down to these business policies that are provided.

  4. The Regent offers great value for money and the staff are welcoming and friendly. Highly recommended!

  5. I love going to Regent bingo in Spalding. The staff are nice and everyone is very welcoming. All ages attend, and if you don’t like going out on your own normally this will be perfect for you. I wouldn’t go out on my own and now I have the confidence to go to the regent on my own and enjoy my time there.
