Hull’s Astoria is a genuine rarity in this whole collection: a bingo hall that stayed independently owned for over sixty years before finally joining a major chain. The building opened on 30 July 1934 as the Astoria Cinema, designed by Colonel J. Adamson, a substantial venue with around 1,500 seats split between stalls and a single balcony, topped by a distinctive saucer-shaped dome with concealed lighting. It even had a musical footnote, hosting a young John Barry, later famous for composing the James Bond theme, performing there with The John Barry Seven in the late 1950s. The cinema closed on 7 June 1963, and rather than standing empty, it reopened almost immediately as the Astoria Bingo Club, run by the independently owned Astoria Bingo Club Ltd, incorporated in 1954, with the Prendergast family involved in its management for decades right up until September 2025.

That independence finally ended in 2025, when Buzz Group took control of the business, with Companies House confirming the change on 23 September 2025 and the old Astoria Bingo Club licence formally surrendered on 30 October. Crucially, the club never closed through this transition. It reopened seamlessly as Buzz Bingo Hull Astoria, and Hull’s own licensing records now describe it as “Buzz Bingo (formerly Astoria Bingo & Social Club).” Rather than running the venue down, Buzz has actively invested in it, applying to extend the premises licence for films, live music and late-night entertainment, and submitting further plans in 2026 to alter the ground floor layout while keeping existing hours intact. The Astoria has effectively become Buzz’s flagship Hull club too, having absorbed the operation previously run from the now-demolished Oslo Road site. Today it remains open, running daily sessions from lunchtime through to late night, inside a building still largely unaltered externally after more than ninety years, one of the few former independent bingo halls left to make it into the modern era largely on its own terms.
