It began life as the Clifton Cinema, which opened on 17 November 1937 with Michael Powell’s The Edge of the World. It was built for local cinema man Jack Prendergast and his associate William Tomlinson Mawson, to a design by Frederick Dyer. It held around 1,150 across the stalls and a single balcony, and had a big café and ballroom above the foyer, so it was built for a night out as much as a film. The look is Georgian meets Art Deco rather than full-on streamlined glitz, and a two-manual Compton organ, first played in 1938, was removed in the early 1960s. The last film, Valley of the Eagle, screened on 17 October 1964, and the building went straight over to bingo with no gap.
What sets Clifton apart is how little changed on the ownership front. Instead of being passed from one national chain to the next, it simply became the Clifton Bingo Club and has stayed independent and family-linked ever since. Jack’s son Patrick, who started out as a trainee cinema operator in 1939, went on to manage the place, and the next generation, Jonathan and Jeremy Prendergast, are named as directors of Clifton Bingo Club Ltd. That’s a rare thing: a bingo club still tied to the family that built the cinema, in a building that has served the same community for nearly 90 years while many of York’s other bingo halls have vanished.

We don’t have a connection with the club other than featuring their details so you should give the club a call to see what they are doing.
It’s been pretty good this last few weeks but this last Sunday a few people didn’t keep to the wearing of masks and some we’re a bit noisy and were asked to leave, there’s always someon e who wants to spoil it for the rest

Hi Hazel, according to their twitter feed, they say: “We’re now open on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 12 noon and every evening from 5pm. Just to let you know about some of the measures we have in place..” So not daily yet. Worth giving them a call first to check what requirements are in place for playing – you may need to book or something.
