Telford was a genuinely modern bingo club from the outset, with no old Odeon or theatre buried beneath it. It opened in 1993 at Southwater Square, right at the heart of the Southwater development alongside Telford Shopping Centre, part of a wave of purpose-built clubs that no longer needed a redundant cinema to find a home. As a new town, much of Telford’s infrastructure was planned rather than inherited, and the Mecca fitted straight into that shops-restaurants-leisure-bingo-parking formula, offering traditional paper bingo, electronic bingo, gaming machines, bar and food facilities and regular promotions across afternoon and evening sessions throughout its life.

Despite being purely functional rather than architecturally significant, it built up the same loyal following seen at the old cinema conversions, with many customers having attended since it first opened. The closure was announced in January 2022, with Mecca confirming the club would shut from Monday 7 February 2022 after 29 years in the town, and staff spent the final three weeks marking the occasion with customers rather than just locking the doors. The closure left Shropshire without a single Mecca Bingo club, with Globe Bingo in Donnington and Buzz Bingo in Shrewsbury the only options remaining locally. Unlike the old cinema conversions, there’s no heritage angle to soften the loss either. A large purpose-built 1990s bingo unit doesn’t convert easily into flats or a pub, so the substantial Southwater space was simply left needing a new tenant, a reminder of how much harder these later-generation clubs are to repurpose once bingo moves out.
