Oslo Road’s Buzz Bingo, later known as Buzz Bingo Hull Astra, was a straightforward purpose-built Gala club rather than a converted cinema, reflecting the wider move away from old picture houses towards modern large-format bingo halls. It was operating as Gala Bingo by 2006, when Hull City Council’s retail study listed it alongside Mecca’s Clough Road and Anlaby Road clubs as one of the city’s three principal bingo venues, offering the usual sizeable auditorium, paper and electronic bingo, slots, a bar and diner, with a relatively modest 15 on-site parking spaces supplemented by nearby commercial parking. Like most of the Gala estate, it became Buzz Bingo in 2018 following the sale to Caledonia Investments, taking on the Astra name to help distinguish it from Hull’s other, much more historic Buzz club at the former Astoria on Holderness Road.
Unlike many similar clubs, Oslo Road wasn’t among the nine closures Buzz announced in March 2023, and it kept trading into early 2024, with customer reviews confirming bingo was still being played there that February. Its ending was unusual too. Rather than simply closing the club and leaving Hull without a Buzz presence, the company relocated the operation into the historic Astoria building on Holderness Road, leaving Oslo Road redundant. Hull City Council’s property records now formally describe the site as demolished, with planning permission granted in August 2025 for a drive-through restaurant, later identified in amended plans as a McDonald’s, on the former bingo site. So the building’s story runs cleanly from Gala Bingo to Buzz Bingo Hull Astra to relocation and demolition, with a fast food drive-through now standing where bingo players once gathered.

I always like visiting this club, it is not too noisy and the staff are always helpful. It is a shame that I do not win often for me to go again. Thanks to all the staff.
I used to go to the St Stephens Gala Bingo Hall in Hull where the prize money was reasonable, now after 2 years this bingo hall has closed, so many of the regulars now go to the bingo hall called Hull Astra.
Now if you go on a Monday through to Thursday, and play the electronic bingo this price will be near on £20, and the prize money to me for this type of money you fork out is shocking. And on a Monday through to Thursday they play free books which I have always disagreed with as the people who pay for their books are paying for these free book winners which I 100% disagree with. Now on the full houses ya are playing for £50 which to me is shocking. Mecca pay more than that when people play free books. It’s a funny old game.
We have been to Gala quiet a few time and really enjoyed it… price was reasonable and surrounding was nice… we went on Monday night and was told it had changed the prices. Wow had they changed the prices it was 10 pound more expensive… we just walked out and will never go again… very dissapointed …
Noisy, often difficult to hear the caller. Cash Bingo called very quickly, and no checking device available. Short staffed. Often only one person on a busy bar. Lack of availability of ‘Dish of the Day’ eg one pie made, full of potato, not cornbeef as advertised. Staff need training, they often do not understand how to answer the questions of customers re the electronic machines(whizzes). Promotional material with offers often arrives late or on the day. No feedback forms available in the club.
