Bromborough’s Buzz Bingo was a proper leisure-park club, no old cinema or theatre history here, just a large purpose-built bingo hall as part of the Croft Retail and Leisure Park at Wirral Leisureland on Welton Road. The Croft was a genuinely substantial development, around 500,000 square feet and attracting roughly 100,000 customers a week, with the bingo club sitting alongside an Odeon multiplex and bowling as one of the site’s principal leisure attractions. It started life as Gala Bingo, operating by the late 2000s, before becoming Buzz Bingo in September 2018 as part of the wider rebrand of Gala’s UK estate. It offered the standard modern format of traditional and electronic bingo, slot machines, a bar and diner serving everything from burgers to full meals, all backed by extensive free parking.

What makes Bromborough particularly worth documenting is how important it actually was locally. Wirral Council’s 2019 commercial leisure assessment found the club accounted for 36% of bingo visits across the study area, almost matching Mecca Birkenhead’s 38%, and captured a remarkable 93% of bingo trips from the immediate Bromborough zone, making it effectively the local bingo hall for that community rather than some peripheral out-of-town option. Buzz announced its closure on 8 March 2023 alongside eight other clubs including Carlisle, Slough and Surrey Quays, citing the same familiar combination of weak post-pandemic recovery, cost-of-living pressures and rising energy costs. An exact final trading date isn’t confirmed, but it’s now permanently closed, a reminder that even a club with a genuinely dominant local market share couldn’t escape the wider economics reshaping British bingo.

  1. We have been to this club today, to the jamboree and even though there were some gremlins the staff where exceptional and attentive and very helpful. Both me and my partner enjoyed ourselves immensley and so we say thank you for a brilliant day.
