The Europa Centre club opened in November 1997 as a thoroughly modern, purpose-built bingo hall, close to Conway Park railway station, and it represented Rank’s shift away from ageing town-centre cinemas towards flexible retail park-style venues. Gone were the balconies and ornate ceilings of the old picture palaces, replaced with a large open-plan auditorium, dedicated electronic bingo areas, a substantial slots arcade, café, bar and around 150 parking spaces on the doorstep. It seated around 1,200 players with roughly 60 electronic terminals, making it one of the larger modern Mecca clubs in the North West, and it got off to a remarkable start, with players landing the National Game jackpot more than six times in its first three months, earning it a reputation as “the luckiest bingo club in the country.” That reputation stuck: in 2019 the club paid out over £2 million in prize money in a single year.
While it was open, Birkenhead was known for far more than the numbers being called, running regular charity fundraisers, themed nights, Bonkers Bingo sessions and community events alongside the usual paper and electronic play. But the same pressures hitting retail bingo across the country eventually caught up with it, and in June 2026 Rank confirmed the club had entered consultation as no longer commercially viable. It closed permanently soon after, just months short of what would have been its 30th anniversary in 2027, bringing an end to almost three decades of bingo in the Europa Centre.
