Middlesbrough Buzz Bingo (Formerly Majestic Bingo) – Longlands Road

Buzz Bingo Middlesbrough carries the Majestic name in its history, but the building itself isn’t the original cinema, that’s an important distinction worth making. The story starts with the Majestic Cinema, whose construction began in 1939 before the war halted the project, with the unfinished building left standing for over a decade until work resumed in 1954. It finally opened on 8 August 1955 with 1,006 seats and an early CinemaScope installation. Its cinema life took a genuinely unusual turn from there, being split into two screens in 1973, briefly trialled as “cine-bingo” under the Noble Organisation, damaged by fire in 1974, and finally settling as a full-time bingo club by 1975.

By around 1990, rather than repair the ageing original building, the owners demolished the old Majestic Cinema entirely and built a brand-new purpose-built bingo hall on the adjoining site, with the former cinema footprint becoming the club’s car park. That new venue kept the Majestic Bingo name, still referred to as such in council planning documents as late as 2017, before becoming Gala Bingo in the late 2010s and then Buzz Bingo in 2018 as part of the nationwide rebrand. Today it remains open and trading as Buzz Bingo Middlesbrough, offering traditional paper and electronic bingo across lunchtime, afternoon and evening sessions, alongside slots, a bar and diner, disabled access and free on-site parking. It’s a good example of a bingo operation outliving its original building entirely: the Majestic name has survived since the 1950s, even though the cinema that first carried it has been gone for well over thirty years.
