Buzz Bingo Castleford Town, right beside the bus station on Albion Street, sits on a site with a genuinely surprising history behind it. The building started life in the 1960s as the Crystal Bowl, a bowling alley and entertainment complex with a theatre, ballroom and disco, opened as part of a major redevelopment of Albion Street and Carlton Street. It became a proper stop on the 1960s soul and pop circuit too, hosting acts including Junior Walker & The All Stars, Georgie Fame, Zoot Money, Long John Baldry and Brian Poole & The Tremeloes, with nights promoted by Sheffield DJ Pete Stringfellow known locally as the “Tinned Chicken” all-nighters. There’s an unexpected archaeological footnote as well: the site sits within an area of Roman Castleford, with Roman lamps found on Albion Street back in 1930 and further Roman material uncovered during the 1960s redevelopment work.
The venue went on to become Crystal Bowl Bingo, later taking on the Ritz Bingo name, and was refurbished and reopened in 1983, a rare fixed date in an otherwise fairly murky ownership trail. The old Ritz club closed briefly during the pandemic, and Buzz Bingo then took over the premises, carrying out a further refurbishment including a new kitchen and accessibility lift, before reopening in 2021. Today, Buzz Bingo Castleford Town is very much open and trading, running multiple daily sessions with traditional paper bingo and electronic touchscreen play, gaming machines, and food and drink, all just steps from the bus station and a short walk from Castleford railway station. Its lineage runs Crystal Bowl entertainment complex to Crystal Bowl Bingo to Ritz Bingo to Buzz Bingo, all built on ground that was once part of a Roman fort, and it continues that story as one of the town’s active bingo venues today.
