Chain: Beacon Bingo (Lost Halls)
Beacon Bingo has one of the longer pedigrees in British bingo, tracing its roots back to Jimmy Thomas, who founded the business in 1963 through Thomas Automatics — a company that designed, manufactured, and exported amusement and leisure equipment to 39 countries worldwide. The first dedicated Beacon Bingo club opened in 1966, marking the brand’s entry into live bingo.
The chain built a reputation for innovation over the following decades. In 1978, Beacon opened the UK’s first purpose-built new bingo club, in Hounslow, West London, and in 1991 it opened a ground-breaking club in Northampton that helped reshape the format of live bingo. The brand’s most famous milestone came on 29 June 1995, when Beacon opened its flagship club in Cricklewood, North London — widely regarded as the largest and most successful bingo club in the world at the time. The Cricklewood club later set a further record in November 2014, paying out a £100,000 jackpot in a single game, the highest payout ever recorded for one game of bingo.
Beacon was also an early mover in electronic and online bingo, rolling out electronic terminals across its clubs and pioneering “noisy bingo” formats in venues including Northampton, Lowestoft, Loughborough, and Redcar. In 2009, the company launched one of the UK’s first online bingo sites to feature live “Site Hosts” helping players navigate the platform.
In April 2010, Beacon Bingo was acquired by Praesepe, a British gaming and leisure company based in Milton Keynes, becoming part of its wider portfolio of adult gaming centres and family entertainment venues. Praesepe itself was acquired in 2012 by the Gauselmann Group, a major German gaming and gambling company, in one of the largest acquisitions in Gauselmann’s history at the time.
Today, Beacon Bingo operates as part of this larger European gaming group, with its remaining clubs forming a smaller, more focused estate compared to the chain’s wider footprint in earlier decades — reflecting a pattern of consolidation seen across much of the UK’s retail bingo sector.
