It does happen in a lot of establishments, probably more often than you think, especially with Britain’s booze culture. Yes, we’re talking about the old ‘fall asleep, and get locked inside’ scenario where a drunken customer wakes up to find themselves locked in, with no obvious way out.
Most people don’t tend to end up in court but Nathan Westmoreland was unfortunate enough to find himself in the dock when others luckily get away with a bit of embarrassing CCTV footage of their escapade being published on Youtube. He was found in Apollo Bingo Club in Rhyl by cleaners the next morning.
During his ‘overnight stay’ (no booking required) he did become hungry, which is quite common in these cases. Upon waking the 35 year old went on to raid the fridge for tomatoes and cucumbers, and more booze (in for a penny, in for a pound!).
He was not charged with burglary, as he had initially entered the building to play bingo, the actual theft of items not being premeditated (so he says…). He also went on to damage a sweet dispenser when trying to retrieve his ‘desert’.
Although arguably this was not a serious crime, one that someone else may have walked away from with a slapped wrist, nevertheless, Judge Niclas Parry jailed him for three months as he has previous record, and obviously felt a lesson had to be learned.
It does beg the question as to how someone who was so trashed that they fell asleep managed to mark their cards (we don’t believe he won the jackpot on the night in question). Anyway, if any players out there have a leaning towards drunken narcolepsy, just make sure that you take a packed lunch with you next time you go for a night at the bingo. Original article.
