Bingo ads often find themselves in the spotlight with the ASA, and often it’s because of bad gaming practices or unclear terms and conditions, but the latest ASA ruling against Vernons Bingo could have repercussions right across all Virtue Fusion sites.
The latest advert from the site states that when players deposit £10, they can receive £30 of freeplay, and this is true, but what the advert doesn’t say is that (as is pretty standard to Virtue Fusion) players must wager their £10 on bingo tickets before they receive their £30 freeplay at Vernons Bingo.
Because of this, the Advertising Standards Agency upheld the complaint and the advert cannot be shown in its current format again. Vernons Bingo will now have to edit the advert, despite stating already that ‘T&Cs apply”.
As many Virtue Fusion sites have this playthrough clause, this judgement by the ASA might mean that lots of adverts will have to be adjusted before they can be shown.
The second part of the complaint rested on the wagering requirements. At Vernons Bingo you must wager your deposit and bonus through four times before you can make a withdrawal, and wagering requirements again are pretty standard. However, the ASA has also upheld this complaint, despite the ‘T&Cs apply” warning in the advert and this ruling could have implications right across the bingo industry.
The advert will not be shown again, as the complaint has been upheld, and Vernons can add themselves to a long list of bingo brands who have had their proverbial fingers burned by the Advertising Standards Agency. However, given how lengthy the terms and conditions at some bingo sites are, we could end up seeing bingo adverts with nothing but the small print.
