If you have teenage children then the chances are you will know what the Harlem Shake is. It is an Internet meme that went viral only last month with literally thousands of videos being made and uploaded to YouTube. Yesterday we found one that featured the staff at Mecca Bingo, Southend and it definitely gave us a giggle!
The concept for the Harlem Shake meme is that each video lasts between 30 and 32 seconds long and feature a short excerpt of the song of the same name by Baauer. The clips will usually start with something usual happening, in this case a game at Mecca Bingo, with the song clip playing. One person, usually wearing a helmet or mask, will then dance alone for approximately 15 seconds with the other people in the clip carrying on as usual paying no attention to the dancer.
As the bass drops then the video cuts to the whole group performing weird and wonderful dances for the remaining 15 seconds. Here is the clip for the Mecca Bingo, Southend crew:

In just one month the viral spread of the Harlem Shake videos reached 4,000 uploads per day. By 15th February 2013 approximately 40,000 videos have been uploaded with a total viewing count of around 175 million! At the time of writing this article the Mecca Bingo clip was near the 8,000 views mark.
This meme created a hit for Baauer who hit number one in the Billboard Hot 100 on February 21st, 2013. Had there now been a change to the Billboard where date from YouTube is incorporated as one of the three metrics used to calculate chart positions, the song would have only reached number 15.
It will be interesting to see if there are to be any more ‘bingo’ Harlem Shakes!
