Staff at Ellesmere Port Mecca Bingo have already gained a good reputation for their charitable works in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care. We reported a while back about their progress, so we thought we’d follow up with what they are up to at the moment.
Their latest initiative is all about handbags. The club is going to place a handbag and wallet donation bin in their club so that members can donate any unwanted items. Called ‘Purses For Nurses’, it’s a joint venture between Mecca Bingo and Marie Curie Cancer Care.
The title of the initiative may be a little misleading, as the purses will not be given to cancer care nurses, but will be sold in charity shops, and the proceeds raised will be used to support the care given at the care homes which provide care for sufferers of cancer and other illnesses.
We have to take our hats off to Mecca Bingo, as their partnership with Marie Curie has raised over half a million pounds since 2010. That is a lot of money and Mecca Bingo must be one of their main donors. When most bingo halls are struggling to keep afloat, it is good to see that some clubs are doing their best to help support those who really need help.
Mecca Bingo don’t tend to shout about their charitable works either, and it would be nice to see other clubs joining in and maybe get a bit of competition going which might further increase support of the many UK charities.
Charity work can be quite difficult to arrange and carry through, but as anyone who has been involved will know, it is a highly rewarding experience. In fact, Mecca appear to have come up with the winning formula, so if there are any other club managers reading this, please take a leaf out of Mecca’s book, and have a chat with a local charity and see how you could work together.
