Bucky Bingo Review

Those of you with a long bingo memory will remember that Buckingham Bingo was once one of the more prominent land bingo operators in the UK. They launched their online brand as Bucky Bingo, and run on our favourite platform, Virtue Fusion / Playtech. Then in 2011, the retail bingo arm was sold, and Bucky became an online proposition only. Fast forward to recent times, and in February 2020 Bucky made the switch away from VF and has gone the way of the Dragonfish.

Was this a wise move? It’s hard to fathom why anyone would move away from the Rolls Royce of online bingo software to the Mini Metro, Dragonfish. In truth, it all comes down to costs – if you can sustain a large player base, VF makes sense. If you can’t DF is the way to go. As a bingo player, it’s always disappointing to see one of those more prominent brands take a step down, as Bucky has done here.

That aside, what about the offering? Well, you get a fairly standard sign-up offer, in line with other sites on the network. The layout of the site is of high quality with lots of modern web-design touches and flourishes. The sign-up fulfils all the Gambling Commission’s KYC requirements, which feels a wee bit intrusive compared to how it used to be done. I’m still tempted to add Adult Filmstar as my occupation choice, but given the hundreds of options, you should be able to find something close to what you actually do.

Off the bat, the bingo rooms are the fairly selection standard for the Dragonfish Network. You have 90 ball and 75 ball games available from the lobby, none are particularly busy like on the big networked VF sites, but that’s a matter of preference. As I’ve said many times, I’d rather play in a room with fewer players and smaller prizes and a chance of winning than go in the big money rooms with hundreds of players but less chance of a win. There are rooms in play 24 / 7 and lots of less frequent games and jackpots that you can pre-buy for.

The games also have a range of price-points, so if you’re on a budget, you won’t bust the bank playing the cheaper games, or indeed sitting in on the regular free games. While tarted up with the new ‘Snow White’ style lobby and rooms, older players will still see the old Globacom way of doing things under all the modern sheen. There are limitations on this platform, pre-buying is only done via the lobby on the non-regular games. Confirmations on how much you’re about to spend are still missing and selecting a non-standard number of tickets can be a bit of a fiddle.

All of this is forgivable if the rooms are busy and the chat is flowing. Thankfully, this is all ok, the site always has something going on. One wonders if any current players know it was once a retail chain, as there’s no mention of that side beyond the about page. The community side of things seems a bit lacking as well – when you compare them to existing retail bingo chain sites. Beyond the chat-rooms, there is little evidence of a bigger community. The promotion schedule is fairly basic as you’d expect on a typical network skin, which sadly is what Bucky seems to have become with this move.

There’s little beyond the branding that speaks to their once great history. What Bucky is now is a former shadow of its former self, like any site that goes from VF to DF. It’s not all bad though. If you don’t know the back-story or come to this as a DF fan, the site is one of the better-looking skins. If you just want a good bingo game with smaller rooms and winnable prize pots, hop on board. If you like a good lively chatroom and lots of chat activity, it’s also a winner. There’s enough slots and side games if you fancy a bit of that and plenty of big money games on the rotation as well.

Our Verdict:

IF you just want to jump in, play some bingo and chat, you can’t go wrong at Bucky. Ok, so its a shadow of its former self with the software change not having done it any favours, and now the community aspect is a bit lacking. That said, it still offers a streamlined bingo experience which budget concious players will appreciate.
