Date of closure: TBC
Address (for reference only):
At the moment we do not have details of the events that led up to, or any of the circumstances surrounding the closure of the Ritz Bingo Wokingham, but we do know a bit about about the venue’s history.
The bingo hall was situated in what was once the Ritz Cinema. If you look at the picture of the building’s exterior below it looks like a fully modern building, however this was due the addition of an extension. The original cinema was opened in 1937, and with 716 seats was quite a small venue. The original exterior had a ‘fin’, a common cinema embellishment, although that has now gone. ABC cinemas took over in 1937, and Star Cinemas in 1939. In 1977 it was taken over by an independent who split the building for bingo and cinema (cine-bingo). However, from 1979 onwards it became a full time bingo venue, and was operated by Gala, until Ritz Bingo took over in August 2012.
We are not sure exactly when or why the club closed, so if you have any further details that may assist us, and you would like to share them with our readers, we would love to hear from you. If you let us know what you know, we will put the details online with your name credited (if you wish, or we can credit the article as anonymous). You will be doing a service to the bingo community and posterity by helping us record details of all Britain’s bingo clubs and halls. Thank you.
