Our knowledge of the Stockport Mecca only extends to its previous life as a cinema, so, if you have any information regarding the actual bingo club please let us know as we’d love to hear from you.

The premises originally opened in 1932 as the Plaza Super Cinema, and as with many cinemas of the day, it also doubled up for live acts which were accompanied by a Rank theatre organ. Also as with many other cinemas, it had its own restaurant, and it continued to serve until the cinema’s closure in 1966, when it was bought by Mecca Bingo. The bingo hall lasted until 2000, a reasonable run, and we’re guessing that it was hit by the economic and legislative problems that many bingo halls suffered during the era.

Unluckily for bingo players the premises underwent a full renovation in 2009, but at least the building still exists and hasn’t gone the way of demolition as many other halls have.
