Date of closure: 8 April 2012
Address (for reference only):
Penistone Road Mecca Bingo will open for the last time on the 8th of April 2012. The closure has been caused due to a financial rationalisation move by the bingo giant. Apparently the club was not a commercially viable venture, and as there is another Mecca Bingo in the centre of Sheffield this is probably a case of ‘business sense’ (unfortunately).
Like many other club closures, the finger has been pointed at the usual suspects, taxation, the smoking ban, and online bingo, all of which add up to the ‘curse’, which has affected many clubs over the years, even the the main players such as Mecca.

It looks like the club premises will never be used for bingo again. Moves are underway to convert the location into retail units, however whilst the proposals have been backed by Sheffield councillors, some quarters are expressing concern about the impact of such a development on the current small businesses. Nothing is set in stone as yet, and when we hear of any more developments we’ll let you know. Original article.

Sheffield Town Council has accepted proposals for the opening of a Lidl and a Home Bargains store on the site of the old Mecca Bingo Club. Although many local residents may miss the bingo at the club there were no real objections to the proposals as it will create jobs for local residents. Original article
