The Hackney Mecca Bingo was located in an old cinema, and offered bingo players the opportunity to play bingo everyday, afternoon and evening. The building had started life as an Odeon cinema, which opened in 1938. It was converted to bingo in 1961 and continued to operate as a bingo club for 55 years until its closure in 2016.

Lesly Clifford of Rank Group said this about the club – “the club makes minimal profit – visits and admissions have been in decline for some time.” Mecca were made an offer to terminate their lease, and given the decline at the club it made commercial sense to accept the offer.

Plans were passed in 2017 to demolish the hall and build luxury flats in its place, much to the disappointment of campaigners who fought to keep the hall open.

You can read more about the closure here – and a piece by Vice at the club in 2015 is online here.
