  1. My Mum worked at this bingo hall from 1964 until 1967, we were always regaled on her return, of the latest prizes which could be won on the wonderful Razzle – Dazzle. These up to the minute prizes included a wall mounted plastic tea dispenser, a clock in the shape of a guitar – of which my mum was convinced ticked “Danny Boy”,LoL, I remeber going to the bingo in the afternoon in Summer holidays and being delighted with all the magical lights and numbers shining all about me and the sqeals of the housewives when they had a win.

We lived just around the corner in Lansdowne Place and at the weekends we would push each other in an old pram down the slopes outside the bingo pretending to be Batman in his Batmobile. I remember the fuss when Ken Dodd visited the bingo along with Diddy David Hamilton and my mum getting his autograph for my beloved big Sister Pat, happy days indeed…

  2. n the 1950s I went to the Mere Lance Picture House practically three times a week with the lads If I could afford the sixpence to get in. In 1962 it became Mere Lane Bingo Hall. On Monk Street next to the Picture House was the Mere Villa Social Club where bingo was also played. The Mere Lane Bingo Hall can be seen on the following link: (scroll down to picture number 245), and there is a recent 2008 photo on
