We do know that priorly the Alpha Bingo club was the Gainsborough Cinema (the ‘Gainey’), and it opened as Alpha Bingo in 1962. But, at the moment we do not have the details of the events that led up to, or any of the circumstances surrounding the closure of Alpha Bingo Liverpool. If you do have any details that may assist us, and you would like to share them with our site visitors we would love to hear from you. If you contact us, and let us know what you know, we will put the details online with your name credited. You will be doing a service to the bingo community and posterity by helping us record details of all Britain’s bingo clubs and halls. Thank you.

  1. The Gainsborough Cinema was located at 215, Knowsley Road, Bootle, L20 4NW. The Gainsborough Cinema was opened on 18th May 1922. Seating was provided for 1,000 in the stalls and 300 in the circle. The stage was 41ft wide. Built and operated by an independent operator, it was taken over by the Associated British Cinemas(ABC) chain on 1st June 1931. It was equipped with a British Thomson-Houston (BTH) sound system.

The Gainsborough Cinema was closed by ABC on 12th November 1960 with Jerry Lewis in “The Bellboy” and Gordon Scott in “Tarzan the Magnificent”.

It was converted into an Alpha Bingo Club on 25th September 1962 and later operated as a Mecca Bingo Club into at least 1990. After closing, the building stood empty and unused for many years. It was demolished around 2003, and the next-door Ryder car showrooms extended their business onto the site.
