At the moment we do not have details of the events that led up to, or any of the circumstances surrounding the closure of the Gala Bingo Newport. We do know that the ‘Newport Maindee’ had a run of thirty three years before closing in 1994. Having opened originally as a cinema in 1939, the Maindee seated almost twelve hundred people. The premises have now been ‘Wetherspooned’ as is the fate of a few bingo halls of late. If you have any further details that may assist us, and you would like to share them with our readers, we would love to hear from you. If you let us know what you know, we will put the details online with your name credited (if you wish, or we can credit the article as anonymous). You will be doing a service to the bingo community and posterity by helping us record details of all Britain’s bingo clubs and halls. Thank you.
Other Lost Halls In The Area
The photo below appears to be a cinema appreciation group visit to the club. There are many people who attend these events, and they happen up and down and across the country. This shot gives a great view from the stage end of the club, of the size of the stalls and the balcony seating. Photograph by: Martin Tapsell.
Yes, the gallery photo is of a CTA visit to the former cinema whilst still open for bingo.
CTA stands for the Cinema Theatre Association, who publishes a bi-monthly magazine, The Bulletin, plus an annual publication, Picture House, all as a part of membership… a registered charity, they campaign for the re-use and retention of these buildings, rather than demolition…
