Castleford’s Park Road club was a completely different proposition to the town’s other bingo venue on Albion Street, a large, purpose-built drive-to leisure club sitting on Park Road in Glasshoughton, backed by more than 200 parking spaces and surrounded by the area’s growing retail and leisure scene. It started life as Gala Bingo, with Wakefield licensing records confirming Gala Group Limited as the applicant for the premises in November 2005, and it offered the standard big-box format of the era, a large auditorium, electronic bingo, slots, bar and diner. Like the rest of the Gala estate, it became Buzz Bingo in September 2018 following the sale to Caledonia Investments and the wider retail rebrand.

Unusually, Park Road didn’t survive into the major wave of Buzz closures in 2023. Instead, Wakefield’s Gambling Act register shows the bingo premises licence was surrendered on 4 October 2021, and an old phone listing preserved a telling message for customers: “We are moving!! join us on Albion Street!!” Rather than abandoning Castleford altogether, Buzz simply consolidated its town operation into the Albion Street club. The Park Road building itself didn’t linger empty for long either. It was subsequently acquired for redevelopment, and CAMRA records the site as demolished between March and July 2022, cleared to make way for a new Lidl supermarket. So while Albion Street’s bingo story carried on under a new name, Park Road’s ended cleanly: closed, demolished, and replaced by a supermarket within the space of a year.

  1. I have always found the staff at Castleford Gala very helpful and friendly and are the reason I would not go to any other club.
