St James' Street

St. James’s Street Gala was located in the premises of the old Empire Theatre of Varieties which opened in 1894. Originally a variety venue, movies joined the billboard in 1909, and in 1911 it underwent alterations to increase seating capacity to 1,808. The theatre closed in 1955, but the venue was reopened as an independent cinema, which changed ownership in 1958, before becoming a bingo club in the sixties. Taken over by Gala in the nineties, it was closed in 1995, when Gala opened a nearby purpose built club.
