Date of closure: July 2009
Address (for reference only):
The closure of Bristol Riva Bingo Bristol fits into an all too familiar pattern. It was decided to close the club due to revenue losses which have been attributed to various factors including the smoking ban, increased taxation of bingo halls and the Gaming Act.
In a rare public airing of accounts, the club showed that it actually made a loss of £200,000 in 2008, due to a 100% drop in custom over a two year period. With figures like that it is hard to have anything other than sympathy for the owners of the club. More sympathy should however be directed to the employees who lost their jobs, and the regulars who had been coming to the club for years. It is expected that the closure will have a knock on effect for local businesses who netted passing trade from the bingo hall goers. A sad story indeed.
