This is one of the genuinely stranger bingo hall stories in this collection, because the club wasn’t in an old cinema, theatre or purpose-built box, but hidden inside a former underground bus depot beneath Bradford Interchange. The Interchange complex was built in the early 1970s as part of a huge transport redevelopment, opening as a bus station in 1977 and renamed Bradford Interchange in 1983, with a lower depot capable of holding around 160 buses. By the 1990s that depot was surplus to requirements, and part of it was converted into commercial use, eventually including a bingo hall accessed via Nelson Street, with the rest of the old depot given over to bingo parking.
The club opened in 2002 as Buckingham Bingo, quickly becoming a significant player locally, with Bradford Council’s 2008 retail study finding it accounted for 28% of bingo trips across the district. Ownership then got a little messy, with Club 3000 acquiring several Buckingham clubs in 2011, though Bradford’s own planning records show Gala Leisure applying for signage there by 2012, suggesting the venue settled as Gala Bingo before the familiar rebrand to Buzz in 2018. It offered the standard modern package with a bar, gaming machines, around 200 parking spaces and generally good food hygiene ratings. But its end came not from falling bingo numbers, rather from the building itself. On 9 March 2023, Buzz confirmed the club would not reopen after being temporarily closed following covid, then deemed “not safe for use,” with repair costs to the ageing 1970s concrete structure spiralling. That decision looked prescient less than a year later, when the wider Interchange itself closed in January 2024 due to serious water damage and steel corrosion, with West Yorkshire Combined Authority now describing the whole structure as reaching the end of its 50-year lifespan. It’s a fittingly odd end for a bingo hall that spent 21 years operating inside a converted bus garage under a train station.

The club is excellent, the only issue my daughter & myself have is that we have both received something (a promotional offer through the post) today 09.04.13 for 31st March, which isn’t any good. Bearing in mind my daughter doesn’t live with me she lives at Queensbury & I live in Halifax, this isn’t the 1st time neither.
