The Hippodrome has been a bingo hall since 1968, after it was converted from an old theatre. The Empire Theatre of Varieties was opened in 1903, and was a large capacity venue, with seating for over 2,000, which held stage to both variety and cinema screenings. The original cinema was however reconstructed in the thirties, and the seating was reduced by approximately 1,400 to only 900. Many of the impressive original features were lost during this phase, including the dressing rooms, and stage boxes. The seating was further reduced to allow for a widening of the proscenium in 1956, and the Hippodrome managed to stay away from the claws of the national cinema chains, right up until its closure in 1968.

Although the club itself was friendly, my wife and myself were uncomfortable with the amount of flies in the club. After a recent visit my wife had to attend the walk-in centre across the road for treatment on what was described to us as a possible flea bite. Speaking to other people they also said they had complained about the same problem, but nothing has been done.
I have been playing bingo for many years twice a week I sit upstairs. I feel they have spirits ghost in the toilets and the chairs on the top foyer. Lots of noise people talking but nobody there. Toilet rolls being thrown whilst I’m in the toilet but nobody there!? Very weird
Too many people think they have their names on the seats, very very childish people, if you want a certain seat then get in early
