The Commodore was opened as a cinema in 1936, and originally with a seating capacity of 1,507, the cinema was the biggest on the island. An independent, it was fully equipped for stage shows as well as cinema. It was taken over by Isle of Wight Theatres in 1972, and then later by Star Cinemas. Star split the venue to accommodate bingo in the late sixties, and also converted the ballroom for cinema use. Its owners have changed over the years (including Cannon) and more recently Commodore Bingo, although it has has always managed to stave off the problems that have beset many other clubs and have led to their closure.
