Apollo Bingo Lowestoft occupies a site with a genuinely colourful history, even though the present building only dates from 2000. It began life as the Hippodrome Theatre in 1904, designed by R. S. Cockrill as a circus venue with a rather remarkable sliding roof and a sunken performance ring that could actually be flooded with water. It moved into variety theatre use within a couple of years and later served as a wartime meeting point for evacuated children, with early ownership traceable to F. V. Barr Ltd, listed as proprietor in a 1929 Kelly’s Directory. The venue transitioned into bingo by the 1960s as the Hippodrome Bingo Club, and was clearly a serious operation by the 1990s, with a local player scooping a £75,000 National Bingo Game jackpot in April 1995.

Disaster struck in 1999, when the original Hippodrome building was destroyed by fire, thankfully while empty. Rather than the bingo operation disappearing with it, a new club was built on the same site and opened in July 2000, seating 623 across two floors with two bars, a diner and a balcony smoking area overlooking the harbour. By this point the club had become Beacon Bingo, acquired by Praesepe in 2010 and folded into the German Gauselmann Group in 2012. In 2021, Lowestoft was one of only three surviving Beacon clubs, alongside Cricklewood and Northampton, rebranded as Merkur Bingo. The most recent change came in 2025, when Merkur sold the club to Real Fun Group, who relaunched it as Apollo Bingo Lowestoft. It remains open today, a bingo operation with roots stretching back to the 1960s occupying a site whose entertainment history goes all the way back to a flooded Edwardian circus ring in 1904.

  1. Myself and my wife attended here last Sunday as we were on holiday in Lowestoft. We found it very clean the staff were very helpful and we got a free Sunday lunch too which was lovely. Very impressed, will defiantly go again when in Lowestoft or Yarmouth.

  2. First visit to Lowestoft club, found it very friendly and clean, excellent food served and the staff went out of their way to help us. We enjoyed it so much went back the next day, and we are on holiday again in Lowestoft very soon and are planning to go to the bingo hall again. The table games are very cheap compared to other bingo halls. Main stage games are very reasonable.

  3. I was asked today by my friend if my bingo club was doing anything special to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee on Tuesday, and I couldn’t give her an answer because I am not aware if in fact there is anything special laid on for Tuesday?
