South Hams Bingo Club was a bingo upstairs, boozer downstairs setup in the old Regal Cinema building. The Regal opened in 1933 and showed its last films in 1973, after which the building was split in two. The upstairs became South Hams Bingo Club, and the downstairs became a bar, now The Regal, an independently run pub and entertainment venue.
The two halves shouldn’t be treated as one continuous bingo operation. The upstairs club no longer appears to run as a regular bingo club, though we can’t say when or why it stopped. Bingo hasn’t vanished from the building, though. South Devon CAMRA still lists it among The Regal’s activities, and the pub’s own directory entry includes it, so occasional bingo nights carry on downstairs. It’s best described as a former dedicated club whose spirit lives on as the odd social night at the bar.
