Club 3000 Bingo Ipswich occupies a genuinely historic building, the 1936 Odeon Cinema, and it’s been kept in continuous entertainment use for nearly 90 years since. The Odeon opened on 7 September 1936, designed by George Coles, one of the major cinema architects of the period, seating a substantial 1,764 people in classic streamlined Art Deco style. It was tripled into three screens in 1975, but that didn’t last, and the cinema closed for good on 3 July 1982. Rather than staying split up, the building was de-tripled and converted into a Top Rank Bingo club, giving it back something close to its original single large auditorium, before later becoming Mecca Bingo and establishing itself as one of Ipswich’s two significant permanent bingo halls, occupying over 55 metres of Lloyds Avenue frontage.
On 16 August 2019, Rank Group announced it had agreed to sell five Mecca clubs, including Ipswich, Cwmbran, Greenock, Hyde Road and Leith, to Club 3000 Bingo for £2.2 million, and the Lloyds Avenue club has operated as Club 3000 Bingo Ipswich ever since. Today it offers the modern version of the traditional bingo experience, with multiple daily sessions, paper and electronic games, gaming machines, food and drink, all still housed within that original 1930s Odeon shell, seating around 1,200 in its current configuration. There’s no dedicated car park given its town-centre position, but it’s within easy reach of the nearby NCP car park and Tower Ramparts bus station. It stands as a good example of a much-loved old building carrying on doing exactly the same job it always has, bringing people together for entertainment, just under a different name.

A friend and I came on Weds evening last week and won’t be coming again. It was very noisy during the play bingo and the caller had the mike so close that you couldn’t understand a word that he was saying. You didn’t know if it was a line or a house, very bad. The main caller wasn’t much better. I had to keep looking at which numbers were being called as you couldn’t understand him either. Will stick to Colchester in future as you can hear what the caller says and it isn’t noisy.
