Chain: Riva Bingo (Lost Halls)
Riva Bingo was a small UK chain with clubs in Aberdeen, Bristol, Cardiff, Newark, and Sutton, none of which continue trading under the Riva name today.
The Aberdeen club, at Queens Links Leisure Park, opened in 1999 at a cost of £4 million but closed after struggling financially, employing almost 30 people at the time of its closure, with the site reportedly running at a loss rather than being part of any wider planned closure programme.
The Bristol club, on Wells Road, closed after posting a £200,000 loss in 2008, following a reported 100% drop in custom over the previous two years, a decline attributed to the smoking ban, rising taxation on bingo halls, and changes brought in under the Gaming Act.
The Newark club, on Lombard Street, appears to have had a further life beyond Riva, with the same Castlegate Centre site now trading as Pery’s Bingo, suggesting a change of ownership or branding rather than a simple closure.
Across its five known sites, Riva Bingo’s story reflects a mix of outright closures driven by falling attendances and rising costs, alongside at least one instance of a club continuing on under new ownership and a different name, a common pattern among the UK’s smaller regional chains as the wider industry has consolidated over the past two decades.
