Chain: Opera Bingo
Opera Bingo is a small, independent bingo chain operating across five clubs in the North West of England, with a particular concentration in Cumbria. It is run by Graves (Cumberland) Ltd, also trading as GCL Leisure, a privately owned, family-run company registered in England, with its base at Falcon Place, Workington.
Unlike many of the larger national chains, Opera Bingo has remained outside the ownership of the bigger PLC operators, retaining an independent, regional identity across all of its clubs.
The Opera Bingo name has a genuine link to theatre and cinema history in the region. The Workington club takes its name from the original Workington Opera House, built in 1888 as the Queen’s Jubilee Hall & Opera House. That building was used for bingo for many years before closing (reports place this at either 2000 or 2004), with the operator later moving the Workington club to its current home in a former cinema, John Peel House on Ladies Walk.
The Carlisle club’s local name, Rex Opera Bingo, points to a similar layering of history, likely reflecting the building’s earlier life as the Rex cinema before its conversion to bingo use.
This pattern, small clubs repurposed from old theatres and cinemas across Cumbria and the wider region, gives Opera Bingo a distinct identity compared to purpose-built or corporately rebranded halls seen elsewhere in the industry.
