Chain: Cosmo Bingo
Cosmo Bingo is a small chain of two bingo clubs in the North West of England, based in Eccles and Stalybridge, Greater Manchester. Both clubs have long histories as well-loved local venues in their respective towns, known for a friendly, family-run atmosphere.
In July 2019, both Cosmo venues were taken over by BoyleSports, Ireland’s largest independent bookmaker, founded by John Boyle in 1982 — the same parent company behind Boyle Bingo, which we covered earlier in Northern Ireland. The purchase marked a move away from BoyleSports’ core sports betting business into English retail bingo, and rather than simply absorbing the clubs, the new owners chose to retain the well-established Cosmo name given its strong local recognition in both towns.
Since the takeover, BoyleSports has invested significantly in both venues — the Stalybridge club underwent a complete refurbishment during the Covid-19 lockdowns, introducing “Bingo Bee” handheld tablets that let players order drinks and play gaming machines from their seats, alongside a new gaming machine room and a “Smart Lounge” for noisy bingo formats. The Stalybridge club has also aimed to become one of the first bingo halls in the UK licensed for weddings as well as bingo, reportedly inspired by the venue’s popularity as a hen party destination.
Today, Cosmo Bingo continues to trade as a small, well-regarded two-club chain — a notable example of a traditional independent bingo brand being preserved and modernised under new ownership, rather than being absorbed into a larger corporate rebrand as has happened with so many other regional names.
