Chain: Carlton Bingo
Carlton Bingo is one of Scotland’s leading bingo operators, currently running ten clubs across the country, from city-centre venues to smaller town-based halls. The company was established in 1998, when George Carter, Chris Barr, Brian King and Peter Perrins bought out the bingo interests of Taylor Clark Limited, laying the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of Scottish bingo entertainment.
The chain’s head office remains in Inverness, its original hometown, with a separate operations office in Stirling. Several Carlton venues have interesting histories of their own — Carlton Bingo Dunfermline grew from a small club on Canmore Street in the 1960s into a purpose-built, 1,000-seat venue at Fife Leisure Park from 2005 onwards, while Carlton Bingo Partick occupies a building that was once one of Glasgow’s most popular dance halls.
In March 2022, Carlton became the first bingo operator in the UK to transfer ownership to an Employee Ownership Trust, a landmark moment for the sector and one of the largest employee takeovers of its kind in Scotland. Long-serving staff are a notable feature of the business — the company reports a combined employee length of service exceeding 1,500 years across its workforce, including one employee celebrating 40 years at the Dunfermline club.
Carlton Bingo clubs typically combine traditional paper bingo with electronic terminals, alongside fruit machines, licensed bars, and food menus cooked to order. The chain also operates its own online bingo site, CarltonBingo.com, extending the brand beyond its physical clubs.
