William Hill Hit With £6.2 Million Fine

Saturday, Feb. 24th 2018 7:56 AM

Over the last few months we have seen a number of online gambling operators hit with some pretty hefty fines from the Gambling Commission. The largest to date was £7.8 million against 888 but on Tuesday 20th February, the Commission published details of a £6.2 million fine levied against William Hill.

The majority of the fines that have been dished out by the Gambling Commission have been around failures in social responsibility and anti-money laundering. Social Responsibility Failures Cost Butlers Bingo

Over the last few months we have seen some quite large fines levied against a number of gambling operators for failures around the social responsibility policies. Gala were fined £2.3 million and 888 a massive £7.8 million. The Gambling Commission (UKGC) chose to investigate the company after an Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruling that was published back in June 2016. There had been one complaint about an onsite advert that focused on the welcome offer, an offer that was ‘Deposit £10, play with £25’. The complainant felt the ad was misleading because the significant terms around wagering were not clear. The ASA agreed and upheld the complaint.

I thought at the time they were doing what had happened with other players, that I was being banned for what they consider to be bonus abuse.

This was not the case, and when I started receiving emails from them requesting bank details, I asked what was going on. It turns out that when I closed my 888 Poker account a few years ago, 888 should have closed all associated accounts.

When Blighty Bingo launched back in January 2017 we noticed something a little different in the cashier after we made a deposit. At this point we were informed that we had three days to verify our account [read more here]. This was done by entering either our passport or driving licence number.

A recent news article on the Gambling Commission website tells of how many operators are putting their licences in jeopardy by breaching conditions of their licence. This is linked to failing to meet anti-money laundering (AML) and social responsibility requirements.
