As a familiar brand on the high street with a long history, one would expect Mecca Bingo's online offering to be pretty special. I'm happy to say that they don't disappoint. Despite a heavily pink homepage (always off putting for us blokes) the site and layout is pretty impressive.
The design is well thought-out and eye catching - the information well laid out and easy to navigate around. Signing up is a pleasant enough experience, and the information you need is quickly apparent. Better still, it's all very simply laid out and feels like it's aimed at it's target market. A lot of other online Bingo sites make you feel the need to be a mathematician and a lawyer when you first sign-up, but Mecca is simple and too the point.
Mecca have a simple sign-up bonus. Put £10 in, get a free £10 to play with. There's no match bonus, so people who like to put a load of money on at the start to get a big match bonus in return will be disappointed. Personally, I like to start with a tenner - I don't like put down a lot before I know what a place is like, so any bonus over the initial tenner is wasted on me.
Often these big bonuses come with lots of strings attached, and you need to play lots of stuff and deposit more to get money out you won on bonus money, and qualifying your bonuses etc. Here's it's nice and simple and perfect for a beginner to the game.
I did have to dig a bit through pop-up windows to get to the real technical info, but it was there - and there's a lot of basic info laid out at the main site pages that will be sufficient before you even want to get to the small print. Funding your account is easy enough, and you can do it with the minimum of a fiver. You can take that out as well so that's the perfect balance for small time players like myself.
The software that drives the site is provided by Virtue Fusion, who also power Crown Bingo. It has its shortcomings, for starters it's not as intuitive or well laid out as the Parlay gaming platform. It also feels a little system heavy - and the caller never tells you what you're playing for, which is a real peeve for me.
They are not major problems though and could be easily solved - importantly it does nearly all the good things. They could improve the purchasing of future games from within the interface as it's not apparent how you get to future games. Other than that, it all works as it should. They could also make it easier to fund the account from the game window, even if it just popped up another browser window or something similar.
Whoosh! Being thrown straight into one of the busiest Bingo chat rooms I've seen was a breeze. I was welcomed, and the chat runs at an amazing pace. You have to keep on your toes. Plenty of chat games and the CMs are happy to help if you need to speak to them.
In the evenings there are routinely 300+ players in the game, so as you can imagine, the money reflects this. In the evenings games are often around the £400 full house level, with line and two lines around the hundred pound mark. As a result, the games often whiz past and finish really quickly.
If you like more of a chance of winning (but less money) then you'd be better off at one of the small halls, but, if you do win with Mecca, it's going to be massive. And with a great range of games, and good value, it's not going to cost you an arm and a leg to be in with a chance.
As you'd expect, with such a top brand everything's tightly sewn up. They don't send your password details via email, so if you forget it, you have to reset it which is all handled automatically. The padlock's there where you want it to be and the game feels stable and secure, even with a lot of players.
It just feels classy and a great place to play. They do need to slightly improve some of the software features as I've already mention, but overall - there's little to fault Mecca for on their online offering. The prize money is massive, the value of the games is well balanced and the community is buzzing - Mecca is one online Bingo site I'll be returning too time and time again. Overall rating - 9 / 10 (September 29th 2006)
