William Hill Bingo's new TV campaign is making waves for all the wrong reasons. A number of complaints were made to the Advertising Standards Authority about their TV advert which depicted a wife altering the clock in the kitchen to get her husband out earlier so she could play Bingo. According to the ASA's report, "Three viewers objected that the ad was harmful, because they believed it depicted someone who was addicted to gambling and was attempting to hide that from their family by deception."
In response, William Hill Bingo had this to say, They believed the woman's behaviour was light-hearted and did not portray, condone or encourage socially irresponsible behaviour or behaviour that could lead to financial, social or emotional harm." Well, they would say that, wouldn't they? Anyway, they've been told not to use the advert any more in its current form, but thanks to the wonders of YouTube, you can still see the advert below.
Luckily they have several other adverts that weren't complained about to the ASA. But once again thay did raise my heckles thanks to the continued nonsense of making Bingo look like a women's game. If ever a Bingo brand was going to appeal to men, William Hill Bingo would be it. With those adverts though they are once again alienating a large potential market of male players.
