We featured the plight of the Essex Road Mecca Bingo in Islington a few times the last couple of months. The club was one of the unlucky nine Mecca halls closed, became a rallying point for the 'Stop Destroying My Bingo' campaign before closing in March.
The now empty hall has suffered a dreadful final chapter. Left empty, it was targeted by the organisers of an illegal rave over the past weekend. They basically created havoc and vandalised the premises, wrecking the seating and spraying graffiti on the walls. It's not a fitting end to the Grade II listed building. It really saddens me to see these classic halls going this way. There's no bringing them back when they're gone, and all we end up with is more bland, mega halls. Sad news.
