Tessa Jowell, the Culture Secretary is hoping that with new gaming licenses, the UK can become a centre of respectability and a shining example of good practice for the online gaming world. Speaking at the opening of the first international summit to discuss the global impact of online gambling, she said regulating the game was not about tax revenues, but protecting UK players against unscrupulous overseas firms and operators.
In the light of the backwards and frankly hypocritical US law passed this month, it's refreshing to see the UK government doing it's bit to support and regulate a major industry and protect the people who use it. All UK bingo sites currently run via other territories, such as Gibraltar. Whilst networks like St Minvers and operators like Mecca and Gala provide safeguards and a recognisable face for UK players, having sites like that operating from the UK would give everyone peace-of-mind.
