Merry Christmas And A Happy New Year

I'm keeping it short and sweet this month, as we're all preoccupied with doing our Christmas preparations and stuff! I'd like to start this month's newsletter by wishing all Playing Bingo readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New 2008. Speaking of 2008, there's plenty of new sections and content planned for the site, so stay tuned!

Blake Robson Wins Bingo Caller Of The Year

November the 25th saw a new champion crowned Bingo Caller Of The Year. Blake Robson won the final at the Wood Green Mecca Bingo, beating the other five regional winners to claim the title. Blake calls at the South Shields Mecca Bingo, and will be spending the next year being an ambassador for the game. As well as the trophy, he wins a trip to Las Vegas and £500.

Last year's Bingo Caller Of The Year, and Playing Bingo columnist Brett Hyrjak was at the final, as one of the judges. In his latest column, Brett writes about his involvement in the competition as well as featuring videos and pictures from the competition. One of the videos was from the National Bingo Game Association itself and gives a great feel for the competition. Read Brett's piece on the final here.

Bingo Trade Figures

The last month has seen a batch of stories around top UK Bingo companies Rank and Gala. There's been a flurry of activity around Rank shares - Malaysian gaming company Genting has amassed a 10% stake in the company, as has UK property developer Richardson Capital. Rank was forced to scrap dividend payments for its shareholders following disappointing figures on its latest trading report. Gala Coral have also seen a drop in figures at following Bingo, but despite what's been described as 'challenging conditions' the company's profits were up as a whole. There is an ongoing sense of doom and gloom in the industry, and the first half of 2008 will be a make or break time for many Bingo clubs and people in the industry. Let's hope the New Year holds a marked improvement as a lot of jobs and established Bingo Halls will suffer if things get much worse.
