Lyric Club Wellingborough, Midland Road Background And History
An independent club, the Lyric closed down due to the financial pressures that have affected many bingo clubs over the past two decades. This was the result of the combination of high overheads and a fall in customers perhaps due to the smoking ban and the proliferation of online bingo. The club's previous operators have included Coral, Gala and Buckingham Bingo.
We don't know much about the actual building's history, other than the fact that it was built in 1935. One point of interest though is that we have found the club mentioned several times in the context of 'hauntings'. Apparently it is haunted by two ghosts, which have been seen by bingo players. Can you tell us anymore about the ghosts or the club itself? Please contact us if you have anything to tell us about the club.

I saw your appeal for information/pictures of the old Lyric Club in Wellingborough and I am writing because I can confirm what has happened to the building.
It was sitting vacant for approximately 2 years and in December last year, we became the new tenants. It is now being refurbished and used as our Church building.
If you would like some photos, I'd be happy to oblige. If you want to see it in person, we have a building opening ceremony on the 30th March at 6pm and you'd be very welcome to come along.

The Lyric club that is now closed is not the former Lyric cinema that was adjacent. The Lyric Cinema opened in 1934 and soon became an ABC cinema. In the 1960's it passed to Star who ran it as a bingo club until its eventual demolition for the Arndale Centre. The developers then constructed a purpose built Bingo club on an adjacent site that was run initially by Coral, then Gala then by Buckingham. It closed for a while then reopened as the Lyric Club under private ownership until closure. It is now used as a church.
