Mecca Bingo Watford, King Street Background And History

Watford Mecca closed after the owners accepted an offer on what Mecca themselves described as a struggling club with poor facilities. There are plans for the building to be demolished and turned into a shop and flats, although some of the Art Deco facade may remain.

Watford Mecca was situated in the premises of the old Central Hall. The 'Hall' opened in 1913, but was redesigned by George Cole (prolific cinema designer), when it became part of the Granada circuit in the 1930s. It had seating for over twelve hundred, and was bought by Essoldo in 1954. Mecca bought the premises in 1968 and converted it into a bingo club which lasted for over forty years.

As of February 2015, plans to partially demolish the building to make way for a block of flats have been approved by Watford Borough Council. And, the original Art Deco facade will however be kept.

Three years later it looks like the project is almost finished. 25 apartments have been built, but the (almost) good news is that at least the orgiginal facade remains.
