Mecca Bingo Wallsend, High Street West Background And History
At the moment we do not have details of the events that led up to, or any of the circumstances surrounding the closure of the Mecca Bingo Wallsend, but we do know a bit about about the venue's history.
The club originally opened in 1939 as the Ritz Cinema, which had seating for over 1,600 patrons. An Art Deco style cinema it was designed by Percy L. Browne, Son and Harding, who were noted cinema architects across the north east.
The cinema closed in 1962, and like many which closed during the period it was taken over by Mecca who converted it for bingo use. It almost lasted forty years, but closed in 2011. The building still stands, although we are not sure of it's condition, or wether or not it is being used.
If you have any further details that may assist us, and you would like to share them with our readers, we would love to hear from you. You will be doing a service to the bingo community and posterity by helping us record details of all Britain's bingo clubs and halls. Thank you.
