Club Memory

Our mam, 'Nora Longstaff' was manager of The Rex Bingo Hall for many years and she loved her job there, having first started as an ice-cream seller when it was a Picture House, many moons ago.

At first it was owned by Louis Pemberton before Mr Mason took over. We remember one tale mam told where she had plucked up the courage to ask for a rise for her staff from Mr Mason - no sooner had she asked that he up and offed - mam was later told that, 'You don't tell the boss what to do, he tells you!' Nevertheless, mam got the rise for her staff eventually and always tried to be firm but fair in her management.

Sadly, mam passed away two years ago this January and we are saddened to see the demise of the building which held such purpose and fond memories for mam and our family. It was a vibrant and friendly hub of a community in New Silksworth and part of our great cultural and social history that should be preserved as part of our heritage. We believe the building has been sold but don't know who to I'm afraid, or what is to become of it!

Ie wish you luck in the pursuit of your quest to preserve the 'Lost Bingo Halls'.
