Roxy Bingo Sowerby Bridge, Wharf Street Background And History
Roxy Bingo inhabited one of the most unusual locations for a bingo hall before it closed. It was located literally on the edge of a bridge, in the premises of a previous cinema. The original cinema was the 'Roxy', a small venue with seating for just over eight hundred people. It opened around 1912, and was owned by Gaumont until 1951 when it was taken over by an independent operator. The cinema was closed in 1963, a year in which many cinemas were closed or taken over, and it lay empty until bingo found its home there in 1972. We are not sure why the cinema closed, so if you know what happened, please contact us and let us know.
