Gala Bingo Oxford, Cowley Road Background And History

The Regal started its life in 1937 as a cinema, designed by the cinema specialist Robert Cromie. It was converted into a bingo hall in 1970, and stayed as one until its closure in 2004. The Gala Club closed to move to a new purpose built bingo hall at the Ozone Leisure Park. The Regal was granted Grade II listed building status in 2005.

After standing empty for a few years, the building is currently in the process of transformation to a live venue. There's a story on the transformation of the Regal and the plans for its future here.

Haunted Memories

Working at the Regal was my first job. I started when I was 18 and spent 3yrs there from 1994-97. I loved working there: making several good friends, but there was a dark side to the building - it was incredibly haunted! Most of the staff me included hated having to go to certain areas of the building alone especially the old projection room which contained the original projection machines from its days as a cinema. A lot of fantastic memories but a genuinly terrifying place to be at times.

Cinema Days

I remember the Gala Cowley when it was the Regal Cinema. I was studying in Oxford between 1962 and 1965 and used to visit the cinema on occasion. It was part of the ABC Cinema Chain as were the two other major cinemas in Oxford and tended to show 'lesser important films'. I remember seeing a number ofHorror Films there. At that time, the building seemed cavernous and cold. I was surprised to learn that it had later been granted Grade II status. However, looking a more recent photographs, I can better understand its rating now.
