Mecca Bingo Manchester, Preston Street Background And History

At the moment we do not have details of the events that led up to, or any of the circumstances surrounding the closure of the Mecca Bingo Manchester, but we do know a bit about about the venue's history.

The venue opened on 7th October 1901 as the Grand Junction Theatre. It was re-named Hulme Hippodrome Theatre in 1905 and started showing films as well as drama and variety. In 1960, it became a ‘revue bar’ presenting striptease performers after having been taken over by the Brennon Cinemas circuit in 1950, this time it was refurbished and redecorated. It had become the Hulme Hippodrome Theatre again.

After the strip club closed in 1962 it became Mecca Bingo, which continued until its closure in 1986.
