Jasmine Bingo Tottenham, High Road Background And History

At the moment we do not have details of the events that led up to, or any of the circumstances surrounding the closure of the Jasmine Bingo Tottenham. We do however know a bit about the venue's history. The venue opened as the Palace Theatre of Varieties in 1908.

A medium sized theatre, with seating for over 1700, it was designed by theatre architects Wylson & Long. The interior was Grecian, with boxes aside the stage, and gilded figures of Muses adding to the effect. A variety venue, with 8 dressing rooms, it nevertheless did succumb to cinema, and in 1922 it started showing films. In 1924 it became a full time cinema, renamed the Canadian Cinema, a name which only lasted a year, the name subsequently reverting back to Palace Theatre.

From 1929 onwards it underwent a series of changes of ownership: owners included Rank, Odeon, and Gaumont, all the big players of the day. Last owners Rank closed the cinema in 1969, and it was converted for bingo use. Under Mecca Bingo ownership the club continued until the 1990s when Jasmine Bingo took over, but they eventually succumbed and closed in 1996. The building is listed, and is now owned by a church, so although bingo is no more, at least a great piece of architecture remains.
