Standard Bingo Hackney, Goldsmith's Row Background And History

At the moment we do not have details of the events that led up to, or any of the circumstances surrounding the closure of the Standard Bingo Hackney, in fact, at the moment, we must admit to not being 100% sure of the name but, we do know a bit about about the venue's history, and we also have an article covering the original opening of Standard Bingo.

The premises originally opened as the Electric Theatre with seating for 882 patrons in 1911. A year later it became the Standard Cinema an independent that was unlike many cinemas of the day, rather bland on the interior as well as the exterior.

It was rebuilt to a George Coles design in 1927, and again in 1935. George Coles was responsible for many cinema designs of the time, moving away from the Neo Classical designs and introducing Art Deco design to many cinemas. It re-opened in 1937 with increased seating, the interior having been practically gutted, and it now became known as the Standard Super Cinema. Having been an independent for most of its life the cinema did in later years come under ownership of the Granada chain.

After closure in 1960 it became a bingo hall at some point, and later a snooker hall. Sadly the building was demolished, and has since been built over with housing.

If you have any further details that may assist us, and you would like to share them with our readers, we would love to hear from you. If you let us know what you know, we will put the details online with your name credited (if you wish, or we can credit the article as anonymous). You will be doing a service to the bingo community and posterity by helping us record details of all Britain's bingo clubs and halls. Thank you.

London's First Cinema To Bingo Conversion

My husband Gerry Fox opened the Standard Cinema as the first Bingo Club in a cinema in london before Mecca and Top Rank. He was the caller and we did not have a Bingo Numbered Board, we had to have one made and a chap sitting behind to switch the number called on. I am writing a story about his amazing insight into Bingo to the masses and have got True Stories interested in it. As you know not a lot is documented about this time in 1960 for the Standard and I am going to see if the archives will help. I remember the police were outside the Standard on horse back controlling the crowds. The Hackney Gazette and East London Advertiser were there also, I have a picture of some famous names who opened it such as Bernie Breslaw etc. Unfortunately Gerry passed away last year and this started me thinking of how clever he was.
